How Temping Can Help Your Career as a Legal Secretary

Temping.jpgWorking as a temporary Legal Secretary can be a fantastic way of gaining new skills, experiences and exposure to different environments, helping shape your future career. We recently caught up with Georgia Montague, who is currently working as a temporary Legal Secretary via Ambition, to gain an insight into why she chose to take on temporary roles and how this has helped her career so far.

Tell me about your career to date, Georgia.

After completing my CILEX course at college, I worked in a small local law firm supporting a Licensed Conveyancer and a Partner. This was a fantastic experience and a really busy role; however, I always wanted to try a career in the city. When I was made redundant it felt like the perfect opportunity to make that move.

I met with Ambition and had a thorough chat with my consultant about my skills and experiences to date along with my long-term aspirations. By the end of the same day, I had been offered a temporary role in a great law firm for a couple of weeks. On completion of that assignment, I was then offered another temporary assignment at a top London law firm in the city, where I have been temping since September.

Why did you decide to give temping a try?

I decided to try temping to determine if working in the city was what I really wanted to do – it didn’t take me long to realise I love city life!

How do you feel this has benefited your career?

I think temping has given me more confidence and experience and has greatly improved my knowledge and skill set. I have gained exposure to lots of different people and made some great connections, worked in some fantastic environments, and gained a unique insight into the world of city law firms.

What has been the best thing about temping?

I would definitely say the opportunity to meet and work with some fantastic people!

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about temping?

I would definitely recommend temping to anyone as it is an excellent opportunity to experience working in different firms to find your dream job. It has been especially beneficial for me as I am working hard to establish my career, so it has helped me transition from a small local law firm into a large city law firm with ease, allowing me to focus on my long-term aspirations. The job market is very competitive in the legal sector, so I feel that the experience I have gained to date will really help me stand out from the crowd in the future!
